Email spam and me!

I just spent the last 20 minutes following links and clicking unsubscribe/opt out. My husband thinks I’m crazy and I should just let mail washer process the spam mail. But the FTC went to all the trouble to make the Can Spam Act of 2003 and I’m going to make sure internet companies comply!

When I first started doing this I went from getting 100+ spam emails a day to around 20. Sometimes it seems someone freshly sells my email address and I get an influx. So I dutifully download the mail and scroll through clicking unsubscribe and opt out links. If the emails aren’t Can Spam Act compliant and there is no link to click I forward it to the FTC’s Spam report email address. (I’m sure those people reading spam@ftc.gov think I’m some freaking crazy whacko.) I really do try not to send every single one to you Mr Spam Act Compliance People!

The ones that really piss me off are the penis enlargement email spams. Unless they include the penis, stop trying to get me to enlarge my non existant one. And notice the men they use to advertise these sites are hurculean strong men? Every “big” guy I’ve known was short changed in the size of his lower regions. Another thing, how come only MEN get to enlarge their penis, where are my enlarge your clitoris/boobs/earlobs and other misc body parts geared just for women? This penis thing is really sexist!

In all seriousness now, I do have some tips on how to NOT get spam mail in the first place. Do NOT use your real, everyday email address on the web. Get a yahoo mail account to use when purusing web sites, posting on forums and signing up for web services. The only time you should use your real email address is when you’re ordering online and using secure sites.

And lastly, knowledge is power. The more you know about the Can Spam Act the more you can protect your rights and freedoms. Visit the FTC here and read up on the specifics of the act.

A sad experience with banking for my son.

Yesterday I took my son out to lunch then over to one of our local banks to open up his very first checking account. To my complete suprise we get there and find out that because of the Patriot Act my son can’t have a checking account until he’s 18.

He can have a savings account but not a bank debit/credit card with it and he’s pretty much limited to only 2 withdrawls a month.

My son can get a job in 1 year when he’s 13 but he can’t have a checking account. When he turns 16 he can have a liscence to drive and I”ll expect him to make his own car payments and insurance payments, but he can’t have a checking account. He can join the military with my permission at 17 but he can’t have a checking account.

What on earth are we teaching our children about financial responsibility? By the time he’s 18 and can open his own account I won’t be there at his side to teach him how to balance his accounts. You don’t have to learn how to use Quicken to reconcile the sock drawer account.

I want him to learn the things about a checking account that you only learn from experience. Forgetting to enter a check, getting dangerously low and close to overdrawn, managing his funds so that won’t happen but all with the security of me there in case the worst happens. I want him to feel the pride of making his first deposit with money he’s earned.

It saddens me that as a society we are looking at the forest and forgetting the trees that make it up.
